This huge, shiny mall – home to over 250 shops – caters for every whim and is, therefore, generally pulsing at the seams with bag-laden shoppers. All the major fashion chains (Topshop, H&M, Zara) and high street giants, plus John Lewis and Selfridges, ensure a constant flow of consumers. In between are smaller chains, gift stores, endless cafés and a vast food court, topped with a multi-screen cinema. The decor offers a mildly incongruous neo-classical theme, with sweeping marble halls, frolicking nymph murals and Romanesque busts surveying the retail frenzy.

The Quays, Salford

This sprawling indoor factory outlet offers clothes, books, gifts and homeware at discounts of between 25 and 75 per cent. What you’ll get depends largely on how happy you are to devote hours to rummaging. The selection of shops are generally classy, and include Karen Millen, Flannels, Whistles and Mikey Jewellery, which almost always has something glittery and worth snapping up for peanuts. If you want to make a day of it, the mall also houses cinemas and a range of eateries.
